Project Description

Gillingham Pier Development

Overview

The Gillingham Pier Development, initiated in 2010, was a significant project that transformed the area into a vibrant new hub. During the early stages, the development focused on land clearing, infrastructure planning, and the construction of key buildings. Andy, the construction consultant on the new Asda store, captured some fascinating and historical photos from the roof during this phase, offering a unique perspective on the project’s progress.

Challenges & Solutions

At the time, the project faced several challenges typical of large-scale developments:

Land Clearing: The site needed significant clearance before construction could begin, including preparation for the Mast and Riggin’ pub and other key structures.

Infrastructure and Road Layout: The road layout was still in the planning stages, which made early-stage construction and access difficult.

Ongoing Construction: Key structures, such as the Police Station and the University Technical College (UTC), were still under construction during this phase.

In the early stages, coordination was key, with careful planning required for the ongoing construction of the Asda store, alongside the development of surrounding facilities.

Outcome

The photos captured by Andy from the roof provide a snapshot of a transformative moment in the Gillingham Pier Development. At the time, the area was being cleared and prepared for new developments, setting the foundation for what would become a thriving part of Gillingham. The Police Station and UTC, although still under construction, would eventually become key features of the area, and the Mast and Riggin’ pub, along with completed road layouts, would help to bring the development to life. This historical insight into the early stages highlights the complexity and vision behind the Gillingham Pier Development
